Kerala Launches Heli-Tourism Push to Boost High-End Travel and Connectivity

In a visionary step towards redefining luxury tourism in Kerala, the state government has invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from certified helicopter service operators and aggregators to launch heli-tourism services connecting prime tourist destinations across the state. This initiative is part of Kerala Tourism’s broader strategy to position the state as a premium, high-speed travel destination offering diverse experiences—from serene beaches to misty hill stations—within a single day’s reach.

Fly Over God’s Own Country
The planned heli-tourism network will offer regular, safe, and efficient aerial transport to iconic locations including Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Kumarakom, Vagamon, and Bekal. For tourists pressed for time, this means skipping hours-long road journeys and enjoying breathtaking aerial views en route to their dream destinations. A senior official from the Tourism Department noted, “Many tourists land in Kochi but miss out on destinations like Munnar due to long road trips. Helicopter rides can cut that travel time to under an hour at an estimated cost of just INR 5,000 per person.”

Boost to Pilgrimage and Regional Tourism
The initiative also aims to enhance pilgrimage tourism, especially for devotees visiting Sabarimala from distant states like Andhra Pradesh. Helicopter access could give pilgrims more time for worship and exploration, transforming what’s usually a tiring journey into a comfortable and time-saving experience.

Overcoming Early Setbacks
Though originally launched in December 2023, the heli-tourism program faced delays due to forest department restrictions and the absence of a comprehensive operational policy. Recognizing the gap, the state finalized a dedicated heli-tourism policy, approved by the Cabinet in December 2024. With the policy in place, Kerala Tourism has reopened the bidding process. Technical presentations by shortlisted applicants are scheduled for June 23, with participation expected from up to ten leading operators.

Infrastructure and Sustainability in Focus
The new policy includes robust plans for the development of heliports, helistations, and support infrastructure, in full compliance with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines. Officials assured that the project involves minimal land usage and emphasizes sustainable development, making it both an environmentally conscious and economically viable solution for the future.

A Bold Step Into the Future
With this initiative, Kerala is not only improving regional connectivity but also setting the stage for a premium tourism experience that caters to both domestic and international travelers. Whether it's the backwaters of Kumarakom or the tea gardens of Munnar, heli-tourism is set to revolutionize travel in God’s Own Country.
